QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Donations, eligibility, the lending model, and technical support.

Who can request a computer?

Students, university students, and young professionals in Guatemala who are pursuing education or developing professional skills and need reliable access to a computer. Applications are submitted through our Request a Computer form, which is in Spanish.

How are recipients selected?

Applicants complete our request form, and we review each application. We may follow up with a short interview before matching a prepared device to a specific need. Full selection criteria will be published here.

Are computers given away permanently?

No — the program uses a lending and reuse model. A recipient keeps the computer for the loan period (about six months, extendable), and afterward it returns to the program so it can be prepared for someone else.

How long can someone keep a computer?

Loans run for approximately six months, and can be extended depending on availability and the recipient’s continuing need.

Can a loan be extended?

Yes. Extensions are possible depending on equipment availability and whether the recipient still needs the device.

What happens when someone no longer needs the computer?

It can be returned to the program, where it is cleaned, serviced, prepared again, and placed with another recipient.

What happens if a computer is damaged?

We work with recipients in good faith to assess and repair damage where possible. Policy details are being finalized and will be published here.

What types of computers do you accept?

Working laptops and desktops — MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac, Windows laptops, desktop computers — along with chargers, power adapters, and useful accessories. Any working laptop from the last 10–12 years can potentially be helpful.

Are donated computers securely wiped?

Yes. Before a device is used by another person, the previous owner’s data is securely removed. The device is then reset, inspected, and prepared.

Do recipients receive technical support?

Yes, whenever possible — initial setup, basic troubleshooting, software assistance, updates, and general technology questions.

Can I donate money?

Yes. Financial contributions support device preparation, accessories, repairs, transportation, software, technical support, and program administration. Our online giving option is being set up — please contact us in the meantime.

Can I adopt a student?

Yes. Adopt a Student lets you contribute toward providing a computer to a specific recipient. See the Adopt a Student page for details.

Can I volunteer?

Yes. We welcome help with device preparation, technical support, and program logistics. Get in touch through the Contact page.

Where does the program operate?

The program currently focuses on students and young professionals in Guatemala, with computer donations coming primarily from the United States. Policy details are being finalized and will be published here.
